Trailer of the Week: The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo
We’d received a kick-ass teaser trailer a few months ago, but this is our first real look at David Fincher’s take on the dark Swedish novel.
There are so many things in this trailer that they got right. First and foremost, SWEDISH ACCENTS! The movie is still set in Sweden (not Chicago or New Mexico or wherever other American directors would try to move it) and instead of the vague “British-y, this is European right?” accents we so often hear employed for “foreign,” we have real Swedish accents. Marvelous!
The dialogue seems to be lifted straight out of the source material. That implies that we’re sticking pretty close to the book. Fincher has said he’ll be changing a few things, including, allegedly, the ending (so all you smug book fans can’t lure your knowledge of the ending over your friends), but from what we’ve seen in the trailer everything is on the right track.
Rooney Mara. Now, I have seen this girl act for all of five minutes in The Social Network and she was great. I have never seen her in anything else, but I’m sold on her. She had to be good enough to impress Fincher, for one (who turned down Scarlett Johansson and Jennifer Lawrence for the role so he obviously has taste), and she just seems to embody Lisbeth Salander. Noomi Rapace was great in the Swedish trilogy and I think Rooney is going to do an equally worthy job.
Now, the Swedish films were not my favourite. The acting was fine to great, and they stayed very true to the source material. The problem, however, lied in the pacing – in trying to include everything, the movie just sailed by and never gave us time to digest or appreciate what was happening. Considering Fincher’s body of work, I think he’ll be able to avoid this problem. He knows how to craft a story and leave us guessing the ending, while still creating an atmosphere and developing interesting characters. At least, let’s hope he pulls this off and it’s more of a Fight Club than a Benjamin Button.
The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo is released December 2011 and will win ALL THE AWARDS!!!!!!!!!
Side Note: If anyone knows where there is a full version of Trent Reznor & Karen O’s Immigrant Song, used in the teaser trailer, I will reward you with your weight in gold. Maybe.
